This strange looking caterpillar is that of the Vapourer Moth, the female of which has no wings. Those hairs also apparently cause rashes on many humans. So now you know.

I remember as a child being told not to touch them, I seem to recall seeing more of them when I was a child, perhaps it had something to do with eye level!
