Woodlouse

Woodlouse
Our first crustacean!

Woodlice are, as I’m sure you’re all aware, one of the few terrestrial crustaceans. Like their ocean dwelling cousins but unlike most land based animals, they breathe through gills and hence need damp places to live…and aren’t they wonderfully primeval looking? You don’t spot those Stegosaurus like horns to the rear normally, do you?

I had a Woodlouse called Atlas when I was a young person. He was, you’ll be surprised to learn, very large (for a Woodlouse).
