Mushroom identification is notoriously complex and looking at these three specimens one can perhaps see just why a single photo or illustration is not good enough. All these three are Shaggy Inkcaps (AKA Lawyer’s Wigs) but at slightly different stages of their life and looking pretty different, I think you’ll agree.

Yes – I know some people who treat mushroom eating as a dangerous sport. They are well informed but still like that element of risk.

Anyway, all fungus is edible. Some of it only once though.
