It’s not just Hedgehogs that hibernate, Smooth Newts do too. I came across this one and a friend whilst tidying up a small corner at the allotment. On first sight they appear dead, rigidly unmoving but if put out of the way they soon wake up and scuttle off to a new hiding place.
….and no, that’s not its tongue, it’s a bit of grass.
It looks like a monster – so glad you told us about the tongue.
